Did you know that drinking more water can help you lose weight?

Water is vital to our overall health, and we all know that we should be drinking more. But the limited water than many of us actually consume, may be holding you back from losing the weight that you want to lose. Water isn’t just good for you, it is essential, especially if you want to shed those extra pounds.

In fact, water has a larger impact on our ability to lose weight than you may realize. Even though we know we should be drinking more water, there are several reasons why many people don’t.

Drink more water. It seems simple, but many of us just don’t it, whether it be because we simply don’t like the way it tastes, we get busy, or because we don’t realize just how little water you are consuming. The other problem is, most of us don’t know how much water we should be drinking, let alone if we are drinking enough.

How Much Water Should I Be Drinking?

This is a question I get a lot and when I remember this being one of the most complicated questions to get a straight answer because there is so much conflicting information out there.

Remember when we used to be told that we needed to drink eight glasses of water a day?

This flat, one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work for many reasons. For starters, how big are the glasses? Second is that we are all different and so we all have different needs. This eight glasses a day just doesn’t cut it for many people.

If you are someone that is overweight, you are going to need a lot more water than someone who only weighs 100 pounds.

Here is a simple start to figuring out how much water you should be drinking. Take your weight in pounds and divide it in half. This number is how many ounces you should try to drink on a daily basis. So, if you are 300 pounds, you will want your goal to be about 150 ounces of water… or about a gallon. This is where carrying a gallon of water with you really comes in handy.

3 Ways Drinking More Water Can Help You Lose More Weight

  1. Reduces Appetite – Drinking more water, especially before meals helps you reduce your appetite, so you end up eating less. This drop in the amount of food you consume results in fewer calories consume and when you consume fewer calories you lose more weight. Plus, it can cut out cravings which also results in you consuming unnecessary calories. Often hunger and food cravings can be misunderstood when in reality you may be dehydrated and just need a glass of water. You are also less likely to consume sugary, calorie-dense drinks.
  2. Boosts Your Metabolism – Drinking more water can actually boost your metabolism, so you burn more calories. In fact, research suggests that increasing your water intake by 1.5 liters can actually help you burn up to 200 additional calories a day.
  3. Increases Your Energy – Consuming more water can help you increase your energy, and this is really beneficial if you are trying to get more done or get through a workout. Not consuming enough water can lead you to become exhausted more quickly and so you end up not reaching your full potential. These are essentially calories “left on the table,” or calories that could have otherwise been burned.

3 Tips to Drink More Water

  1. Take Water With You – I got into the habit of drinking more water by carrying water with me, and if you follow me on Instagram, you have most likely seen me with my Gallon Gear. This has been really helpful because I always have it on hand, but before my Gallon Gear, I used to just carry a regular gallon jug with me. Not only did I always have the water with me, but it helped me keep track how much water I was drinking.
  2. Track Your Water Intake – Keeping track of how much water you are consuming is a great way to drink more because most people don’t realize how much water they are not drinking. Whether you keep track of how much water you drink through a gallon method I previously mentioned, or you keep track of it through a personal journal or app, be aware of how much water you are or are not drinking. This will make you more aware of the improvements you need to make.
  3. Add Some Flavor or Drink Soda Water – For so many people, water is boring, and I get that. If this is the case, make drinking more water more fun. There are plenty of no-calorie flavors that you can buy to add to your water, and if soda is your vice, then try switching to soda water. There are plenty of soda waters that come in different flavors, and they are all zero calories.
