How to Create a Postive Mindset for More Weight Loss – This is the Key

One thing that I learned when losing weight was that your mindset is extremely important. It is important to have a positive mindset if you want to lose weight, and especially if you want to keep it off once you hit your goals.

In life, we go through many things that bring us a lot of stress and can make us emotional. The way I used to deal with this stress and these emotions was through food. For me, food was comforting, and it made me happy. It was something that allowed me to escape the stress and the things that were going on in my life.

The thing is, although eating would make me feel better, it only did so temporarily. It only helped me at that moment, but long term it did so much more damage. It not only prevented me from losing weight, but it caused me to gain weight until I was 605 pounds. And, it didn’t fix the stress or reasons why I was eating. Once the food was gone, I was faced with my problems again.

We need to stop associating food with making things better because it doesn’t. That is not how you make things go away.

When you don’t fix the reasons you eat, your chances of success go down. When you don’t address the initial problem, you are more likely to gain the weight right back once you lose it. I know, because I had been trying to lose weight since I was 15 years old, but I never fixed why I ate.

Changing your mindset and the way you approach stress is just as important as changing your approach to what you eat. We need to find a way to break through old habits, and this is one of the goals of Team Possible, where you are part of a community that is there to support you and help you change the way you think. It is there to help you build that essential positive mindset that is crucial for successful weight loss.

How to Develop a Positive Mindset

If you want to lose weight, you must develop a positive mindset. Too many people see weight loss as the solution, rather than part of a byproduct. If you are having problems in your life or have a negative mindset, losing weight isn’t going to make those issues go away. They will still exist once you lose weight.

Instead of viewing weight loss as a “fix” you should view it as an effect of creating a positive mindset and a healthier life. Studies have shown that people who think positively tend to exercise more and lose more weight than people who view themselves and their life negatively.

Here are ways that you can start changing your mindset today and become more positive:

Develop New Realistic Goals – Your goals should be small, exact and achievable. Creating goals that are too large can make us feel like we are failing, and we are more likely to give up. GIve yourself weekly and daily goals that you can hit, whether it be with weight loss or things you want to accomplish in your life. Make sure that you don’t set these goals too high, and you keep a realistic idea of what you can accomplish. For example, your goal could be to lose two pounds by the end of the week, or your goal could be to not drink any soda today. Take your goals one step at a time.

Surround Yourself with Supportive People – Who you hang around with has a huge impact on your mindset, and support is crucial for motivation. This is what we try to give to the members of Team Possible; support and motivation to keep you going until you reach your goals. When you are surrounded by people, who don’t take your goals seriously and don’t support you, your chances of losing weight successfully is near impossible. We forget how much the people around us impact our actions and our mindset.

Stop Putting Yourself Down – If you want to change your mindset, you have to stop putting yourself down. For me, this was hard because I was so used to viewing myself as a failure when it came to weight loss. And, I was so used to people making fun of me that I became the punchline to my own jokes. I tore myself down just as much as everyone else did. I had to teach myself to break this habit and learn that yes, it is possible and I can lose weight. I had to realize that it was worth the effort because I was worth it.

Change Your Language – The way you talk can actually impact the way you think. Try to avoid using words like I can’t and I won’t. Instead of saying you can’t lose 100 pounds, say that you can lose 10 pounds. Instead of saying you won’t give up sodas, say I will give up sodas. As you shift your language, you will begin to shift your mindset as you begin to believe what you are saying.  

Stop Expecting a Miracle – So many people want the magic pill that will “fix” their weight loss problem and help them shed all of their weight instantly. There is no magic pill, and you need to stop looking for it. Trust the process of eating healthy and be patient. Your weight will come off but it does take time, and you need to be patient with yourself.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help – We can all be afraid to ask for help, and this happens for many reasons. Sometimes we don’t think we have valid questions, or that we will be judged for them. Or, we may feel like if we have to ask for help, we are failing. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. If you are a member of Team Possible, ask your question in the group, and I will answer it. You’ll have others around you that will help guide you without being judged because guess what? We’ve all been right where you are, and many of us are still on that same journey struggling with the same things you are.

Be Grateful – One way to really develop a positive mindset is to learn to be grateful the thing that you have. At times life can be stressful, and you may feel like the world is against you. There will be times when you feel like nothing is going right and everything is crashing down around you. Stop, take a look at yourself and your life, and find something to be grateful for and focus on that. Learn to be grateful for the moment and the fact that you have the opportunity to make a change. Grab a journal and write it down. Grab some post-its and write down what you are grateful for and post them around your house where you will be sure to see it. Stop focusing on the negatives in your life and start focusing on the good.

How I Deal with Stress and Emotions

I had to learn how to deal with the stress in my life. Stress happens. No matter how positive your mindset is, you will face stress in your life. It is how you deal with stress that will determine how successful you are.

I used to turn to food when I was stressed, just as many people do. I knew this was a pattern and I knew I needed to break it. I needed to find something else for me to do and a new way to handle the stress that is part of life.

I found that when I am stressed, my best solution is to hit the gym. I go to the gym and let out the frustration. No, it doesn’t solve the problems causing me stress, but it gives me something productive to do and a way to channel my emotions in a way that isn’t eating.

Losing weight doesn’t make your problems go away. You still get mad, sad, and stressed. The last thing I want is for you to reach your goals and deal with the stress by turning to food and gaining weight. You need to find a way to deal with your problems now or a way to channels that energy into something positive. Find something that you can do that is active, productive, and conducive to your goals.
