Perhaps one of the hardest things for me when I began to eat healthy, was giving up sodas. And I know that for many people, the idea of giving up soda is a scary thought. It was something that I really stressed about and didn’t think that I could do.

This blog will teach you…

>   How to recognize if you are addicted to soda

>   What to do if you are drinking energy drinks and fruit juice

>   My top 4 alternatives to sugary drinks

>   How sugary drinks impact your weight loss

I Was Addicted to Soda… Are You?

In the end, I was able to give up soda and I don’t regret it. I am so happy that I did. I feel better than I ever have before and as much as I hate to admit it, I was really addicted to them.

I started slowly cutting out soda over time and eventually weaned myself off of them. I also found it easier to get off of soda by replacing it with other beverages that I learned to love just as much.

I found alternative beverages that still gave me the things I was wanting from a soda.

And this concept isn’t just for soda. I didn’t realize in the beginning, but I was drinking a lot of different types of sugary drinks, even some that I thought were good for me.

What About Energy Drinks and Fruit Juice?

Other than sodas, I was downing energy drinks to counteract how sluggish I felt inside. And, as I began to change my habits, I also saw myself turning to juice because I thought it was a healthy alternative for me… fruit is healthy, right?

Yes, fruit is healthy, but the majority of juice you get off the shelves is full of sugar, and that is on top of the natural sugars already in the fruit. It also included so many other ingredients you don’t want to be drinking.

As you give up the sodas and juice, your goal should be to drink more water because you need to stay hydrated. This is crucial if you are trying to lose weight or just live a healthy lifestyle. Water is essential to our life, and our body needs it in order to function properly.

If you are already living a lifestyle full of processed foods, there is a very good chance that you are not staying properly hydrated and are most likely just drinking regular or diet sodas, or other sugary drinks. I also know from experience that it can be hard to switch straight to water because at first, it can seem so… boring.

Top 4 Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

Amino Acids (BCAAs)

Amino acids are a great option because all you do is add them to your daily water. For me, I add mine to a gallon of water and just drink it throughout the entire day. This ensures that I stay hydrated, drink enough water, and they taste really good. You can get them in many different flavors and they even have some benefits that will help you if you are trying to lose weight.

Amino acids actually help you recover faster if you are exercising and they help you lose weight by helping to ward off hunger.

Personally, I usually reach for the BCAAs from Morellifit Nutrition because they are all natural and I know they won’t contain any ingredients that I don’t want to be consuming. If you are going to go for a supplement, it is better if it is high quality.

And they taste amazing.

Sparkling Ice

Sparkling Ice is a drink that I turned to when I was craving a sweet soda because it is carbonated and tastes good.

More importantly, they don’t contain any fats or calories. Although this drink has artificial sugars, it can be a good alternative to calorie-laden sodas and a good stepping stone towards drinking more water. In the end, the goal is to get closer to water and cut out artificial sugars, too.

Sometimes it isn’t just the taste and ingredients of the soda that we are addicted to, it is the sensation the carbonation gives us.

That is another reason these can be used as a step in the right direction. You can begin to replace your sodas with these sweet drinks that are also carbonated.

Sparkling Water

The next step after that is sparkling water. This is a bit harder for people to switch to straight from soda because it tastes pretty plain, but it does provide the carbonation that a lot of people coming off sodas are looking for.

Plus, with sparkling water, you can have more fun than just drinking it plain. You can add some fruit to it to give it a bit of flavor or you can even now buy flavored sparkling waters. One popular brand is La Croix because they have a variety of different flavors, with natural flavoring and no artificial sugars. Mind you, these won’t be as sweet, but they will still give you a carbonated kick, and a tasty flavor to enjoy as well.

Sodas and juice aren’t the only drinks that can be hard to kick when you start to change your eating habits. Many of us are also used to relying on energy drinks to give us a boost.

Energy drinks have a bad rap and for good reason. Many of them are loaded with chemicals and sugars that can really damage our body and eliminate any weight loss goals we may have.

A step in the right direction is Bang.

Unlike most popular energy drinks this one has no calories, no fat, and no fruit juice. It contains BCAAs and a lot of caffeine. This brand still has flavors that contain artificial sweeteners, but it’s a good step in the right direction off of traditional energy drinks. The ultimate goal is to have you eating a diet rich in nutrients so that you don’t need these energy drinks to get through your day.

But if you do need an energy drink, this is a better alternative.

Sugary Drinks and Weight Loss

Getting off sodas, fruit juice, and dangerous energy drinks is important if you want to change your lifestyle and lose weight. These are necessary steps that will have to be taken at one point or another.

Some people can’t make the switch right away and cut soda out completely and that is ok.

If you are one of those people, try making smaller swaps and slowly cut soda out of your diet. This is what I had to do. I had to slowly begin replacing my soda with other types of beverages until I could finally cut all of it out of my diet and enjoyed drinking water.

Nutrition is crucial to losing weight and this includes what you drink. If you are trying to get your soda consumption under control you can still begin to see results through the foods you eat.
