The Secret to Your New Year's Resolution

The Secret to Your New Year’s Resolution

If you hope to lose weight next year, you are among the millions of people around the world who make a resolution to begin a diet and start working out. This is one of the most common New Year’s Resolutions that people make.

I tell people all year not to wait until New Year’s to make new goals and begin losing weight, but I can’t deny the added motivation that thew promise of a “New Year, New You” brings. If losing weight is on your list for things you want to accomplish in the coming year, then congratulations on making that decision. Use your New Year’s Resolution as a jumping off point to leading a healthier life.

No matter what may trigger your decision to start working on your health, it is a positive move. Making that resolution can have many benefits, so don’t wait until January first to begin planning for your goals.

Only 8% of people who make a resolution actually keep it, but don’t let this discourage you from making the decision to work on your health and your goals. If you approach your New Year’s Resolutions the right way, you will find success and break the 8% statistic.

How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

Now that you are aware of the benefits of keeping your weight loss and health resolution, here are some ways that you can ensure that you are successful in the upcoming year.

Know Your Why

I talk a lot about finding your “Why,” or the reason for wanting to lose the weight and work on your health in the first place. For most people, a simple resolution isn’t enough to keep them going, especially when they are working on their goals alone.

My “Why” came after a lost bet made me reach out to a physician and find out what was going on with my health. There, I discovered that I was pre-diabetic and on the verge of having an early heart attack. I was 605 pounds and was told that if I didn’t change my lifestyle, I wouldn’t be around to see my kids grow up.

This scared me, and I knew I had to make a change.

Knowing why you want to get healthy and lose the weight will keep you motivated long after the excitement of making your resolution has worn off.

Make Realistic Goals that are Specific and Measurable

One reason people tend to fail their New Year’s Resolutions is that they don’t make realistic goals, or they fail to make a goal at all. This can make it very difficult to measure your success.

With the new year approaching, you know you want to lose weight, but how much do you want to lose? How much weight should you be losing each month? Each week? What smaller goals can you set for yourself to ensure you are successful week after week? To be successful you will need to set nutrition goals, exercise goals, and weight loss goals.

When you set your goals you need to be sure you are not setting goals that are not realistic. For an example, it is not realistic to assume you can lose ten pounds a week, or fifty pounds a month. Instead, it would be more realistic to set a goal to lose two pounds a week, or ten pounds a month. And, depending on how much weight you have to lose and how dialed in on your nutrition and workouts you are this goal can be easily met, and at times exceeded.

When you set goals that are unrealistic we are become disappointed and discouraged, as we don’t think we are making the progress we should be making. This causes most people to give up and return to their unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand, when you set goals that are achievable and realistic, you are continually seeing success and are motivated to continue. You also are more aware of the real progress you are making.

Build Healthy Habits

If your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, then you need to start by setting your self up to build healthy habits. Get rid of the foods that you shouldn’t be eating and make sure you only have healthy, whole foods available.

To make sure that all of my meals are healthy and I am eating what I am supposed to every day, I like to meal prep. I take one or two days a week and prep all of my meals. This not only ensures that the food you are eating is healthy, but it also saves you time throughout the week.

You also want to set aside time every day to dedicate to exercise, so that it becomes routine.

Building healthy habits is crucial for success, and something I focus heavily on in my How to Lose Weight 101 Guide, which you can also get for free by joining Team Possible. This is also the key element to keeping the weight off once you lose it.

Losing weight isn’t about going on a “special diet” that is temporary until you lose the weight, it is about changing your lifestyle permanently. Once the weight is off, you should be able to keep your new lifestyle going so that you don’t put the weight back on. reach your new year goals

Your support system is there to help you through the hard times and celebrate with you through the good times. They will hold you accountable and keep you motivated.
