Top 3 Myths to Fighting Stubborn Fat

Whether you have a lot of weight to lose like I did or you have gone through the journey of taking the pounds off and are trying to get rid of that last stubborn belly fat, there is probably a handful of conflicting advice that you have gotten. I know, because I heard them as I was losing weight.

Too many people tried to give me advice when I was first starting to lose weight, and I didn’t know who to believe. If you have people telling you how to lose weight, or how to shrink belly fat, then there is a chance you feel even more lost than when you started. You may be trying some of this advice and not be seeing the results that you want.

Often, when we try something that we are told is fool proof, or we try something we are told is the “only way to do something,” and we don’t succeed, it can lead us to believe that there is something that is specifically wrong with us. It makes you ask yourself, “why can’t I lose the weight? What is wrong with me?”

Yes, for some there may be a reason they can’t lose the weight, but for most of us, it is because we are not approaching weight loss with the right advice and so we are holding ourselves back and even sabotaging our results. We simply don’t have the knowledge and tool necessary to be successful on our own.

I know this because I have been there. I had tried to lose weight and failed. I thought I did what I needed to only to either not lose the weight altogether, or lose a little bit and put it all back on. Sometimes, I put on even more weight than I had initially lost. Time and time again I was so discouraged that I didn’t want to continue. I thought it was just the way I was. There were times I thought there was something wrong with me and there was something inherently different about me that caused me to gain weight, rather than be able to lose it all. I felt like there obviously had to be something out of my control that would not let me move forward and I was doomed to carry around the weight forever. 

As it turns out, there was nothing wrong with me, and I had the ability to lose the weight. I was just going about it all wrong! I was listening to people tell me that I had to do “this” to lose the weight, or that I should take “that” shortcut. In reality, they were wrong. There was no shortcut, tricks or hacks to quickly drop the pounds. There was no “easy” way to save my life, and although I didn’t know it at the time, it was going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of patience. It was all about eating right and in the right portions, consistently.  

Top 3 Weight Loss Myths

MYTH: The best way to lose body fat is by taking pills, doing body wraps, consuming meal replacements, and a ton of supplements.

TRUTH: You can’t lose weight by just taking a bunch of pills, supplements, and meal replacements. They just don’t work and can even be dangerous. There is no shortcut or trick you can implement. It takes hard work, patience, and consistency. The only thing on this list I would even say you could use is supplements. If you use the right supplements, such as an all natural protein to help supplement your diet, that is a different story. You can use these to help get the nutrients your diet needs, but they are not a fix-all solution, and there are plenty of supplements that will do more harm than good, so be careful of what you take and do your research first. Never take anything that promises to “burn the fat”.

MYTH: You need to eat specific fat burning foods to lose weight and avoid other high sugar foods to not gain weight.

TRUTH: While you should avoid foods that are high in sugar, there is no such thing as a fat burning food. When you eat, make sure you are eating whole foods, rather than foods that are processed and contain a bunch of sugar and additives that are meant to give it flavor and make it last longer. What matters are the calories in your food, the amount of protein you consume, and eating a combination of healthy food. When you are first starting out, this can be difficult. MYTH: You can “target” stubborn fat on problem areas with special exercises.

TRUTH: For some of you, you may not have heard this myth yet. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may not have gotten to the point where you want to target specific areas of your body, but as you drop the weight, you will get there, and I want you to be ready for this myth. The truth is, where you store fat is mostly up to genetics. Some of us store it in our mid-sections, and some of us may store it in our thighs. It has nothing to do with the type of exercises we are doing and all about your genes. That doesn’t mean you can’t get rid of it, but rather it will have to be worked off just like the fat all over your body.

I know there are plenty of other myths you will come across and be told as you try and lose the weight, but these are the three that I have heard over and over again.
