What Supplements Are in My Stack?

I’ve had a lot of people asking me lately if they should take supplements, and it is most likely because they’ve seen me on my Instagram using some of the supplements from BodyBuilding.com.
At the beginning of my journey, I didn’t rely on supplements. Starting at 605 pounds, I didn’t need them, nor did I have a complete understanding of what each supplement did. As I progressed and lost weight, and learned more about supplements, I added them to my daily life.
Today I use a total of six supplements a day. These supplements help me towards the goals that I have today to build muscle, keep my weight off, and promote my general health.
Wherever you are at on your fitness or weight loss journey you will have different needs, but if you are beginning to take supplements and think that they may be beneficial to you, then you need to be sure that you are taking the right ones for your goals.
When I talk about supplements, I am not talking about weight loss or diet pills that are advertised as a “weight loss” supplement. I am talking about natural supplements that are used to supplement my nutrition where it may be lacking.
Here are the supplements that I take on a daily basis and what each is used for. If you want to give these supplements a try, use my code: POSSIBLEPAT to get a special discount.
Whey Protein Powder
When choosing a protein powder you want to make sure that what you are consuming is made of quality ingredients. I personally use whey protein powder because I think whey is the best type of protein you can consume as a supplement.
Whey is one of the proteins found in dairy and is the byproduct of the cheesemaking process. Using a whey protein powder is a great way to boost your daily protein intake to help you recover from workouts, as it helps to build and repair muscle. I typically consume one to two servings a day post-workout.
Whey protein can also help you lose weight by decreasing hungry, cutting cravings, and increasing satiety. Plus, it can be used to make a great low-calorie meal replacement.
Even though I eat a balanced diet every day I still take a multivitamin to make sure that I am getting all the vitamins that my body needs to be healthy and perform the way it should. Taking a multivitamin is something that I never really considered, but as I am getting older I realize that my body will be needed some additional support if I want my body to age healthily. As your body ages, it can be more difficult to absorb all the necessary vitamins from the foods you eat and taking a multivitamin can help.
Every multivitamin is a little different, and the multivitamin I take is from BodyBuilding.com because it contains 29 nutrients, including B vitamins, Vitamin C, and minerals (like zinc and magnesium).
Here are some benefits my multivitamin:
- Supports healthy aging
- Improves memory
- Boosts energy
- Weight loss
- Stress management
When it comes to doing better in the gym and being able to push yourself further, creatine is one of the most popular supplements. Because my goals are no longer 100% weight loss focused, as I work to keep my body in top shape, creatine has made its way into my daily stack.
Creatine helps your body build muscle while also providing your muscles with additional energy. This is ideal if you are lifting heaving weights or working through high-intensity workouts.
Benefits of taking creatine include:
- Promotes muscle growth
- Increases strength
- Decreases Fatigue
CLA, or Conjugated Linoleic Acid, is a fatty acid that is found naturally in fatty meats, especially in grass-fed beef. People who take CLA do so for many reasons, one of them being for weight loss. Taking CLA helps me maintain muscle while giving me a boost in my metabolism, as it uses the fat in your body for fuel.
This is not the magic weight loss pill, however, and if you have a lot of weight to lose, this will not make it suddenly go away. Instead, this is used as an aid to burn fat and get results at the gym. This will not take off tons of weight, as this can only be done through proper dieting and exercise.
I take fish oil every day for many reasons. Fish oil is a good supplement that you can take to promote the health of your heart, as it lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, and helps to prevent the build-up of plaque that can build up in your arteries.
Fish oil is also good for the health of your brain because it provides omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain function. This can be crucial as we get older. Other fish oil benefits include helping to maintain healthy skin, reducing inflammation, and supports healthy aging.
I also take fish oil because it helps my joints. After years of carrying so much weight and the intense workout that I do now, the health of my joints are important to me because I want to be able to continue to push hard at the gym and remain in the shape I am now.
I take BCAAs daily to help enhance my workouts so that I can get more accomplished at the gym. BCAAs, also known as branched-chain amino acids, also helps preserve muscle mass and increase protein synthesis, which is important, especially if you are dieting because dieting alone can often lead to the loss of muscle. This is why it is important to exercises as you start to diet and lose weight.
I consume BCAAs before, during and after my workout for the reasons mentioned above. I take it before and during my workout so that I can get more done at the gym. BCAAs help to prevent muscle fatigue, letting you workout longer and harder. I also take it post workout to help my muscles rebuild, as BCAAs promote muscle growth.
Whether you are drinking green tea or using the capsule version like me, getting green tea into your diet every day has many benefits. Green tea can help boost vitality, burn fat, and support your overall health.
Here are some of the reasons I consume green tea every day:
- Promotes weight loss – Green tea can help boost your metabolism while also reducing your appetite, helping you lose more weight.
- Protects your heart – Consuming green tea can help lower your risk of heart disease, as it can help lower blood pressure while also increase the blood flow to your heart.
- Protects your brain – Taking a green tea capsule every day can help protect brain function and prevent memory loss.
Should You Take These Supplements?
Because everyone is at different stages of their weight loss journey, I can’t tell you whether or not you should take these supplements. Rather I am hoping that by sharing what supplements I take, you will have a clearer idea of what types of supplements are out there and what purpose they serve.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I didn’t take any supplements when I started losing weight. Instead, I ate the foods found on my free Approved Foods List and took the steps laid out in my How to Lose Weight 101 Guide.
If you are just starting out and have a lot of weight to lose, then chances are you are not ready for most of these supplements. If there is one supplement I would recommend that you start with, it would be protein because this can be made into a healthy meal replacement while providing you with some great weight loss support.
And remember, when taking any supplement you want to look at the ingredient label first to make sure the supplement isn’t full of added sugars that will only stall your weight loss efforts.
